How to Keep a Useful Sleep, Mood and Symptom Diary
Learn how to log daily wellbeing patterns without mistaking correlation for causation.
1. Choose a small set of observations
Begin with sleep timing, sleep quality, energy, mood and any symptoms relevant to you. Consistency matters more than recording every possible factor.
2. Record the time of events
A timestamp helps distinguish what happened before or after a symptom. Backfill forgotten entries with their actual time when you can remember it.
3. Use a consistent rating scale
If you rate energy from 0 to 10, keep the same meaning for each number. Write short notes for unusual circumstances.
4. Review patterns across days
Look for repeated associations between timing, activity, food, stress, sleep and symptoms. A few observations are preliminary and do not prove cause and effect.
5. Test changes carefully
Change one routine at a time where practical and keep logging. If symptoms are persistent or severe, discuss them with a qualified healthcare professional.
